Presentation

This volume examines the biblical female figures and their representations and roles in the Koran. Although none of these women is mentioned by name except Maryam (Mary), they nevertheless have their own profile within Qur’anic theology. Thus, the gender roles of women in the Qur’an become clear. U. Bechmann first introduces theoretical approaches: the debate about the origin of the Qur’an, as well as ways of reception in the history of religion and intertextual relations of biblical and extra-biblical literature to the Qur’an. Subsequently, the individual biblical female figures are examined in terms of their Koranic representation and intertextual function and brought into discussion with the view of contemporary Muslim women.
