Elements biographiques

Né à Edimbourg le 23 Mars 1915, il fut l’élève de Richard Bell et CAStorey. En 1939, il soutient un doctorat sur l’histoire du textile en Islam. En 1941, il est nommé à la SOAS. Après la guerre, il reprend sa carrière universitaire à SOAS. En 1947, il fit des recherches principalement sur la langue et de la société de Hadhramawt. L’un des résultats de cette enquête fut la publication en 1951 de son "South Arabian poetry : prose and poetry from Hadramawt". Après 1964, il est maître de conférences en histoire islamique à Cambridge et dirigea le Centre du Moyen-Orient, à Cambridge. Il pris sa retraite en 1981.
